How the pace calculator works
Pace is simply time divided by distance. Enter any two of distance, time and pace and the third follows:
pace = time ÷ distance
finish time = pace × distance
speed (km/h) = 3600 ÷ seconds per km
finish time = pace × distance
speed (km/h) = 3600 ÷ seconds per km
To switch between miles and kilometers the calculator uses the exact definition, 1 mile = 1.609344 km. That is why an 8:00 per mile pace works out to 4:58 per km, and why 5:00 per km is 8:03 per mile.
Finish times at common paces
A quick reference for planning a goal race. Times are rounded to the nearest second and assume a perfectly even pace.

Common questions
- What pace is a 25-minute 5K? 5:00 per km, or about 8:03 per mile.
- What pace is a sub-4 marathon? About 5:41 per km, or 9:09 per mile. A 2-hour half marathon is the same pace.
- Can I use it for walking or cycling? Yes, the arithmetic is identical. The preset distances are just built for running.
Limits
- The result is an average. Hills, wind, heat, crowds and aid stations all move your real splits around it. The split strategy tool helps you plan how to spread effort across a race.
- Race courses are measured along the shortest possible path. A GPS watch usually reads a little long because you don't run every tangent, so your watch pace can look faster than your official pace.
- To estimate a time at a different distance, use the race predictor.
